Semi-Automatic vs Fully Automatic Washing Machine

Quick answer: A semi-automatic washing machine costs less, uses less water and works without a continuous tap supply, but you move clothes from the wash tub to the spin tub yourself. A fully automatic machine washes, rinses and spins on its own and needs a steady water supply. If water comes at fixed hours or you want to keep costs down, semi-automatic is the practical choice.

Which size do you need?

Capacity is the weight of dry clothes per load. A slightly larger machine lets you wash heavy items like blankets without splitting the load.

HouseholdSuggested capacity
1–2 people6–7 kg
3–4 people7–7.5 kg
5 or more, or bedsheets and blankets often8 kg and above

Why people still choose semi-automatic

  • Lower price for the same capacity
  • Fill water by bucket or hose: no need for a tap with steady pressure
  • You can reuse the wash water for a second load
  • Wash and spin at the same time to finish faster
