5 Star vs 3 Star AC: Is It Worth Paying More?

Quick answer: A 5 star AC uses less electricity than a 3 star AC of the same size, but costs more to buy. It is worth it if you run the AC for many hours a day over most of the year, as in hot regions or a room used day and night. For a few hours a night in a short summer, a 3 star inverter AC is usually the better value.

What the stars mean

The BEE star label rates an AC's seasonal efficiency (ISEER): how much cooling it gives for each unit of electricity across a typical Indian year. More stars means a higher ISEER and a lower bill for the same use. The label on each AC shows its rated yearly consumption, so you can compare two models directly.

Inverter matters more than stars

An inverter AC slows its compressor down once the room is cool instead of switching on and off, which saves more power than the step from 3 to 5 stars on most daily use. Choose inverter first, then decide on the star rating.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on how many hours you run it. Compare the rated yearly consumption (kWh) printed on each AC's star label; the gap between them, times your electricity tariff, is the yearly saving at standard use.
